Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearer.
Ephesians 4:29

I truly think we are not aware of the damage that our words can and do inflict on others. We can’t help but to form our own opinions, but we can prevent ourselves from circulating them. We may form an opinion about something or someone, only to find we have changed it after careful thought or evaluation. The damage comes as a result of what has already been said, we must consider, the person receiving our words has already digested them and in turn established their own opinion, based on our possible misinformation or misguided opinion. Our thoughts may have changed, but once our thoughts are verbalized, they cannot be retracted. A little self control goes a long way and prevents a great deal of damage.

Prayer

Lord, help me to display self control as I interact with others, using my words to edify and lift up instead of tearing down and destroying. Forgive me for the unrestrained words that have found their way from my mouth to the ears and hearts of others, producing grief instead of joy. Amen.
