For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba , Father!" Romans 8:15

We all have fears of one kind or another, and most of us will go to great lengths to avoid having to come into contact with them. God does not want us to be held captive to fear and sometimes will force us to face our worst ones so that we can overcome them and be free from them. A dear friend shared with me a story from her childhood. This was back quite a number of years ago when stoves were used to heat homes. As a child there were times when it was her responsibility to light the stove. The problem; she was terrified of lighting the match. Her mother knew that there were going to be times when her little girl would have to light the stove, and in order to accomplish it, she had to overcome her fear of lighting the match. Her mother insisted that she light the match even amidst her little girl’s tears and pleas. The little girl at that moment perceived her mother as being cruel and could not understand or see her mother’s wisdom in forcing her to face it. The beautiful part was that her mother stood behind and watched as she lit the match and realized there was nothing to fear. There are times when I have had to come face to face with my worst fears. At first glance it may seem as if God is being cruel and certainly not understanding how difficult a task He is asking of me. His hand gently pushes me from behind and says “go on, you can do it”. God in His infinite wisdom knows that the time has come for me to light the match so when it is necessary I will have the ability to light the stove. While it is not pleasant and may even seem quite traumatic, I can be assured He is a good Father that is not leaving me alone but encouraging me to face my fear and be free from its bondage.

Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, I praise You and thank You for bringing me to this place where I have had to come face to face with my worst fears. You have never left me, nor forsaken me. You are my joy and my song. I know You are right behind me giving me the strength and ability to face my fear and overcome. I submit myself into Your capable hands, knowing and trusting in Your perfect love and wisdom. Amen.
