Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:2-3

Our human nature desires to covet. Our hearts passionately desire to possess. It is true that we love and know God but for fear of losing our possessions we hold back a piece of our hearts. We confuse what is necessary with what we desire. Our hearts have become entwined in this world and the things of it. True treasure cannot be found in the things in this world. God has blessed us and while we may view ourselves as prosperous we can not allow the blessings of God take the place of God in our hearts. When we get to the place where what we desire is what God desires we will have all that we ask and more. Jesus said “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. Matthew 5:3. Makes you stop and wonder just what treasure we are seeking, and what is precious to our hearts. It is not our bank accounts that are impoverished as much as it is our souls. Those who possess the Kingdom of Heaven have uprooted their earthly possessions from their hearts. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4. While submitting totally all that we have and all that we are to God we will find true and lasting treasure that exceeds all this world could ever dream up.

Prayer

Forgive us for being afraid to let go of our possessions. We are holding on so desperately that we don’t have a free hand to reach out and grasp the treasures you desire to give, which certainly exceed our own expectations. Dwell within our hearts and uproot all the things that have replaced Your room in our hearts. We delight in You Lord. You are our treasure and where we will find our hearts desire. Amen.
