For what the law
could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending
His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He
condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law
might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but
according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:3-4
The new covenant does not abolish the law; it has given us more than the
letter of the law, it brings it to life within our hearts. It makes it
real, and enables us to embrace the freedom and mercy purchased by Jesus
Christ. The law written on tablets or penned on paper is not contrary to
the new covenant. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not to eliminate it.
This by no means gives us a license to sin knowingly and willingly. But
at the same time we can relax a little realizing that God has all power
and authority over the events and circumstances we face in this life. We
certainly fall short of His holiness. It simply does not have to be the
struggle we make it. Once we make the choice to submit in obedience to
Him, it is then His work in us, not our work. We are the vessels; He is
the One who fills them. We are the clay, and He is the Potter,
continually molding and transforming us into His image. It is not a
legal matter but a matter of the heart. We must be willing to trust in
His workmanship.
Prayer
You are our salvation. Through Jesus Christ Your Son we have been given
new life, freedom, and mercy. We praise you for the compassion and
patience that you extend towards us. We are trusting in the work of Your
hands. Continue to create us in Your Holy image, in Jesus name, Amen.
