Through love and
faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man
avoids evil.
Proverbs 16:6
It seems more than ever many are being enticed to jump aboard the train of
destruction. Sadly enough there is not a lack of things to tempt us in
this world. The advances in science and technology, have made life much
easier for us; as a result we have more time on our hands. Sometimes
much more of that time than necessary is spent seeking to find the
things we should be turning away from. There is an old saying that goes
along with the verse Ecclesiastes 10:18 “Idle hands are the
devil’s workshop”. When King David slacked off, finding plenty of free
time on his hands, he also found himself jumping aboard the train of
destruction. He thought the pleasures he was partaking in were sweet but
they turned bitter instead. Eve thought a small bite of the apple would
be okay, only to discover that it left a sour taste. God made provision
and His extension of mercy and grace led each to a place of repentance
and restoration. There was a less difficult road they could have
traveled. There are plenty of things to distract our hearts and minds
from focusing on Jesus Christ. We are deceived if we think we can just
have a small taste of that “sweet pleasure” and it will be alright. Once
the heart embraces the thought of sin, it is not satisfied to remain
simply a thought. It will eventually manifest itself as a bitter morsel,
with a sour taste. If we will keep our focus on pleasing God, we can
avoid a lot of trouble.
Prayer
Give us strength and wisdom to turn away from all that is not pleasing
to You. You have set a standard, one that we cannot obtain on our own.
We need your spirit to continually guide and instruct us. Give us the
wisdom and insight to turn away from sin, because even the smallest
morsel will leave a bitter taste. We seek You and Your ways Lord,
engrave them upon our hearts. Amen.
