Darkness

By Nell Berry June 21, 2003

Darkness is like the cloak of doom.

It fills each crevice and crack in the room.

It hides in every fold and crease,

in all the ruffles and lacy pleats.

The curtains on each window frame,

are like dark shadows, forms without names.

Under all the furniture, lies a virtual fright,

just waiting to pounce, but stays out of sight.

Darkness does not separate good from bad,

does not distinguish between haves or had,

is not prejudiced against the poor or rich.

And with just one touch of the light switch,

darkness scurries away and is defeated,

light fills the room and shadows are depleted.

I know deep inside, it can do nothing to me,

and yet, the fear of things I can’t see,

sometimes brings me to my knees,

and there, as if held in my Father’s arms,

I feel so safe and secure from all harm.

Just as our hearts are sometimes in despair,

darkness finds solace there.

Then when God’s Spirit comes in,

His light dispels the darkness within.

Jesus is just a breath away,

He’ll light up your life, and no shadows will stay.

Though there will be dark days again,

Jesus is there to be your Friend.
